Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (NMM)
About NMM
Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, NMM, was developed in the 1800’s by Dr Andrew Taylor Still as a fully integrated medical model to diagnose and treat illness. As a frontier physician influenced by the healing ways of the Shashawany tribe, Dr. Still believed there were better treatments than arsenic. He believed by altering the structure of the body (bones, tendons, muscles, nerves), one can bring about a change in function (blood pressure, fighting off infection, pain), allowing the body to heal itself.
His successes lead others to study with him and he ultimately founded one of the first medical schools in the United States, and graduated Nettie Bolles, one of the US’s first female physicians, in 1894. NMM continues to be taught in concert with traditional medicine in Osteopathic medical schools. Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine embraces the relationship between the structure of the body (bones, muscles, fascia) and how well the body works (better blood flow, improved breathing, and drastically reduced pain).
When Western Medicine Fails
As a physician, I see the limitations of traditional western medicine when it comes to injury and pain. We prescribe anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, when those fail, which they typically do, we move on to invasive injections, and burning the nerves that report pain to the brain. Eventually many are told to live with it, have surgery or that their pain is in their heads so there’s nothing we can do. With my specialty training I am able to reach for something more than my prescription pad to support your journey back to living.
I Injured myself... Why haven't I healed yet?
Imagine a ball of clay. You take it and throw it as hard as you can at the wall. It's not aball anymore. Clay doesn't bounce and neither does the human body. When you're in a car accident, fall off a horse, flip an an ATV, slam face first into the sand etc... you are that ball of clay. Sometimes your body needs help finding its way back to its pre-injured self. That's where NMM fits in. Let me work with you to erase your injuries, improve your chronically bad posture and prepare you for a fully function active lifestyle.
